LIVING
QUARTERS
Members
of the 401st live in wooden buildings known as
South East Asia huts. Each hut houses up to four people (during rotations)
and includes a common area complete with a television, VCR, refrigerator,
couch, and dining table and chairs. Bathroom and shower facilities are
located in the center of each block of SEA huts.
CLOTHING
REQUIREMENTS
The
uniform of the day at Tuzla AB is BDUs, with the reverse (stars forward)
American Flag worn on the right shoulder. When off-duty in Rock City
or the Air Force living area, you may wear conservative PT gear similar in style to the "official" wear (athletic shorts, shoes and
T-shirts - no denim, khaki, or tank tops, please). You will need to
bring an official (gray or blue color-coordinated) Air Force PT uniform
with the Air Force logo on it. An "official" Air Force PT
Uniform is required on the Army side of the base and is currently
authorized for off-duty wear. USAF PT clothing may be purchased at the Base Exchange, but the
cost is not reimbursable You will still be required to
carry your weapon, ammo and SFOR badge when wearing workout clothing.
DINING
FACILITIES
We
have two dining facilities at Eagle Base. Closest to the air base is the
Long Horn Cafe, generally a 5-minute walk. The other is about a 15-minute
walk. Breakfast, lunch and dinner are served at both dining facilities.
The basic breakfast menu consists of scrambled eggs, bacon, hash browns,
biscuits and gravy, and French toast. Limited short-order cooking is also
offered. A wide variety of cereals and fruits are also available at every
meal. At least four menu choices are served at lunch and dinner, along
with fast food such as burgers, fries and pizza. Soup, a large salad bar
and a huge variety of desserts are also available at lunch and dinner.
On
the Army side is a Burger King, Taco Bell, Robin Hood, Anthony's Pizza,
Cinnabon and Baskin
Robbins. Also, a variety of snacks can be purchased at the post exchange
on the Army side and at the base exchange in Rock City. The Rock
City Cafe on the AF side offers pizza, calzones and sandwiches as well.
LAUNDRY
SERVICES
Most people do their own laundry in the washers and dryers located in the
common rooms of each block of SEA huts. If you don't mind having someone
else wash your clothes, there is a free laundry service located on the
Army side of Eagle Base. Turnaround time is normally two days. There is no
dry cleaning available, but alterations and starching/pressing services
are available for a nominal fee.
BARBER
SHOP
There
are two barber shops at Eagle Base. One on the Army side and the other is
located on the Air Force side. |

POST EXCHANGE (ARMY SIDE of BASE)
The
AAFES' Post Exchange is open 7 days a week. The store offers beverages,
snacks, magazines, hygiene products, CDs, video tapes, uniforms,
underwear, socks, and even greeting cards. Remember though, it is an Army
PX -- few Air Force uniform items are stocked here. The PX also has a film
developing service. The store accepts U.S. cash, German and Bosnian Marks,
checks, or the Eagle Cash Card, which is now the main method of purchasing
goods and services on Eagle Base. Outside the main PX, there are several
concessions selling T-shirts, souvenir items, jewelry, etc. There is even
a cappuccino bar.
BASE
EXCHANGE (IN ROCK CITY)
The
AAFES Base Exchange in Rock City is pretty small, but they can get anything
that's at the main PX. The store offers a smaller selection of CDs, a few
uniform items, magazines, beverages, snacks, hygiene products and
electronic equipment. The BX also offers a film developing service. The
store is open daily.
CHECK
CASHING
The
Army Finance Center is located down Salute Alley. Multinational Brigade (North)
implemented the Eagle Cash program to replace the use of U.S. currency by
service members, civilian employees, and contractors in the MNB North area
of operations. The card is used like a prepaid credit card. Service
members simply go to the cashier's cage at the Army finance office and
exchange a check or cash for an Eagle Cash card worth the same amount. The
card can be used at nearly every facility on Eagle Base, including the
post office, barber shop, and even most vending machines. Cash value can
be added to the card at any time during the member's tour. The remaining
balance of card can be exchanged for cash at the end of the member's tour
or if the member needs cash for an off-base function. In addition to the
finance services available on the Army side, an Air Force finance
representative from Ramstein Air Base, Germany, visits the base once a
month. They can
provide leave and earnings statements to Air Force members.
WALKING
and DRIVING
Individual
unit vehicles are primarily used for mission essential needs, so you can't
use them just to get around. However, you'll find a short walk will get
you wherever you need to go. The transportation folks here highly
encourage you to get qualified to drive a HMMWV before you leave your
base.
FITNESS
FACILITIES
On
the Army side, the Eagle Sports Complex gym and recreation center is open
seven days a week from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. It has lots of free weights,
Stairmasters and lifecycles, and regularly scheduled aerobics classes.
MAIL
There
are many ways you can send your mail from Tuzla. Service members can send letters
up to 13 oz. as "free mail" to the U.S. and to European APO
addresses. Packages (up to 70 pounds) may also be shipped free to APO
addresses in theater using the military postal system, or "MPS".
It takes about a week for normal mail to be delivered stateside and two
weeks or more for free mail. There is a post office here that offers all
the services (registered, certified, etc.) one would expect a post office
at a permanent location to offer.
